Focusing on body image
This Feb. 1 to 7 is Eating Disorders Awareness Week, seven days dedicated to raising awareness about and helping Canadians who have eating disorders. That includes anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.
These three disorders vary, but all involve unhealthy obsessions with or aversions to food and weight gain. Eating disorders affect people of all demographics but individuals with low self-esteem, body image issues or who struggle to cope with stress are most susceptible.
Anyone seeking treatment for an eating disorder should seek help from a physician, nutritionist or counsellor.
All-Star Game
The people have spoken, and it’s official. After weeks of controversy, John Scott will captain the Pacific Division team in the NHL All-Star Game in Nashville on Sunday, Jan. 31.
Scott has only played 11 games in the NHL this season, but fans voted him into the All-Star Game earlier this season. Scott was recently traded from the Arizona Coyotes to the Montreal Canadiens but will still be allowed to represent the Pacific Division.
Scott joins the Winnipeg Jets’ Dustin Byfuglien and 38 other players from around the league.
Roll out the big wheels
Monster trucks are taking over the MTS Centre. Sand ¬– not ice – will fill the rink from Jan. 30 to 31, when Monster Jam comes to Winnipeg.
The pit party, racing and freestyle events will feature world-famous trucks, including Northern Nightmare, Monster Mutt, Bounty Hunter, Zombie, New Earth Authority, Iron Outlaw, Hotsy and Midnight Rider.
The cross-country 2016 Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour started in Calgary in early January and will end in Halifax at the end of March. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.ca.
