Winnipeg is full of Asian culture, especially at Red River College Polytechnic, where many international students come from China, Vietnam, and South Korea. On Oct. 7, 2022, Red River College Polytechnic Students’ Association (RRCSA) is hosting K-Pop Night to involve students in Asian culture.

K-Pop, or Korean Pop, originated in South Korea and draws influence from genres like pop, experimental, rock, hip-hop, R&B, electronic, and dance.

The event starts at 6 p.m. at RRC Polytech’s Notre Dame Campus, offering free entry to all RRC Polytech students and $5 for others.

Jemma Ignacio, student life director at the RRCSA, said students highly anticipate K-Pop Night. Approximately 200 RRC Polytech students have ordered tickets.

“100 per cent, now is the time to get involved,” Ignacio said.

Ignacio said she encourages everyone to come to K-Pop Night because it is an opportunity to meet new people and experience popular Asian culture.

“Even if you don’t like K-Pop, just come.”

The RRCSA booked local talents to perform at this event. Dominique Geli, better known by her stage name “DJ DOMMI” or “DOMMI” will perform the event’s music.

Geli said enjoying K-Pop music is an excellent way for students to find mutual interests, build friendships, and gain support systems.

“[K-Pop Night] will bring a happy, warm, and fun community together,” Geli said.

The Winnipeg-based K-Pop dance group, Galax-E, will also perform at the event. The group says they are entertainers at heart with a shared love for K-Pop music and Asian culture.

Samantha Wiebe, leader of Galax-E, said attending K-Pop Night is an easy way to experience K-Pop culture.

“Music touches all,” Wiebe said. “Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, you can still understand the feeling behind the songs.”

RRCSA is working to arrange more events for all campuses. They are hosting a Student Art Gallery on Oct. 13, 2022, at RRC Polytech’s Exchange District Campus. Students can submit their art and have it displayed in room P110.
