Leadership award

Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) Director and CEO Stephen Borys has been awarded the Leadership in Arts award by Downtown Winnipeg BIZ at its annual meeting on November 23. Borys was chosen for his “creativity and ingenuity in making the WAG relevant to all Winnipeggers” and “transforming the WAG into one of the many downtown places to simply hang out”. The 2012 recipient of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is credited for leading some of most famous WAG exhibitions and events as well as the WAG’s Inuit Art Centre. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Borys currently serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Manitoba and is on the Board of the Association of Art Museum Director.

Rush drummer retires

In a short article of the November/ December 2015 issue of Drumhead Magazine, Rush drummer Neil Peart admitted to considering himself a retired drummer. He has played drums for the last 50 years, and played with Rush since 1974. In the article, he said his daughter now introduces him as retired. Some have taken this as the announcement of his retirement, while bandmate Geddy Lee suggests the quote is taken out of context. Regardless, Peart said that spending time with family is starting to take priority and that his tendinitis is getting bad. Peart is 63 years old.

Manitoba market all year long

With Winnipeg’s long, frigid winters, many Winnipeggers could easily assume that our city’s farmers’ markets are seasonal and began their hibernation season back in the fall. But, for the grassroots lovers who like local ingredients and supporting the local economy, the St. Norbert Farmer’s Market won’t be closing its doors this winter season. They are now open all year long, the only difference is that the market is being held bi-weekly and indoors. The market is held right across the street from its outdoor summer spot in The Eagles Club where more than 30 vendors from right here in Manitoba sell everything from produce to crafts, perfect for original recipes and small gifts this holiday season.
